Cliff Notes

  1. Well, as Euclid might point out, the straight line is the shortest route.

But, sometimes, the circuitous route can be fun ;-)

  2. BTW, did you see where Steven Hawking is warning us to be careful with AI?

  3. Or, was it Archimedes?

Then again, there is Biblical precedence relating to this - "He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord " ~ Isaiah

  4. Thx Mac, I did not see Hawking's piece on AI. I'll read it.

  5. I read Independent piece you mentioned. As we talked about before in my other long dead blog, it's really hard to predict where AI research will end up. Being a determinist working in the field, I do think that machines that have the same degree of awareness as we will come, but since they are evolving in a very different ocean than we did, It's impossible to know what specific directions they will take or what emergent behaviors will result.

As for us, we already have become cyborgs to some degree. At least those with smart phones. A considerable amount of the information upon which we react is no longer stored in meat.

  6. Good point about smart phones.

I think the Hawking piece was just a reaction to that film with Johny Depp. Not to disrespect Hawking, but how versed is he in AI? Doesn't he, also, heavily rely on machinery for his very survival?

  7. Yeah, I think we worry to much about machine intelligence and not enough about our own.
